A left-arm fast bowler, Gary Putland retained his full contract with South Australia for 2007-08 despite having a quiet season last summer. He was to have an even quieter time in the latest season, with no appearance for the Redbacks, although he took 40 wickets at 17.50 for Southern Districts and came third in the running for the Bradman Medal. The previous year, form and a strained quadriceps had limited his state action to one Ford Ranger Cup match and three Twenty20 outings after he managed five one-day games in his debut season the year before. A former Australia Under-19 representative, Putland was part of the 2005 Academy intake. Cricinfo staff April 2008
