Ireland surge into final with innings victory

Cricinfo staff

February 12, 2007

Ireland 531 for 5 dec (Morgan 209*, Botha 157, Bray 82) beat UAE 243 (Ali 75, Johnston 3-43) and 118 (Rankin 4-56) by an innings and 170 runs
Scorecard

Ireland raced into the Intercontinental Cup final after wrapping up a crushing innings-and-170-run win over UAE in Abu Dhabi. Trent Johnston and Boyd Rankin did the damage in the second innings, sharing seven wickets, as UAE tumbled to 118 all out.

Johnston wrapped up UAE's first innings, trapping last-man Ahmed Raza lbw, and Ireland had no hesitation is asking them to bat again. Johnston then continued his impressive form removing the top three with just 12 runs on the board.

The captain Arshad Ali was trapped leg before for 7 and in the next over Johnston grabbed two in for balls. First Naeemuddin was brilliantly caught by Peter Gillespie diving to his right at deep square-leg, then Gayan Silva edged to the keeper.

When Kevin O'Brien struck in his first over, nipping one back into Saqib Ali, UAE went to lunch in tatters at 36 for 4. After the break Rankin worked through the lower order and UAE folded in just 48 overs, with Kyle McCallan again chipping in with his offspin.

The result means Ireland pip Scotland to a place in the final, against Canada, which is due to be played in late May, providing some consolation for their near-misses in the World Cricket League. The hope is that the match will take place in the South of England, although there is currently a problem finding an available ground.
