Profile
If you believe the hype, then the current battle between Chris Read and Geraint Jones for the England wicketkeeping spot is destined to end with both usurped by Worcestershire's dynamic keeper-batsman Steven Davies. The press spent 2006 heaping praise and pressure in equal amounts on Davies, who only turned 20 midway through the season. Mind you, if he wanted to stay undetected then scoring 192 against Gloucestershire and topping 1000 runs is not the way to do it. It was clear he had talent when he finished above Graeme Hick in the Worcestershire averages in his debut season in 2005, and he was selected for the National Academy and toured the West Indies with England A that winter. A former England Under-19 captain, Davies has impressed everyone who has come across him and, vitally, his glovework is also of an excellent standard. The selectors will be loath to make the same mistakes with Davies as they made with Read and James Foster, but he has time on his side, and his selection for the National Academy in the winter of 2006 showed he is not far way.
