Simon Hughes was a right-arm fast-medium bowler who was a key part of the Middlesex side through the 1980s, although his contributions tended to be overlooked in a side that was packed with internationals. Nevertheless, he won four Championship titles with the county. A graduate of Durham University, he was a natural recruit for them when they gained first-class status in 1992, but like so many of their imports, he was by then past his best.

After retiring he moved into journalism and broadcasting, and he was the analyst on Channel 4's award-winning cricket show. When they lose the rights in 2006, he switched to become a commentator for Channel 5. He has also written several books on cricket, the most notable being A Lot Of Hard Yakka which won the William Hill Sports Book Of The Year in 1997.
