 Profile

An opening batsman who could also bowl medium-pacers, Cassie Andrews played intermittently for New South Wales between 1928-29 and 1930-31, struggling to get into a strong side whose top order boasted Don Bradman, Archie Jackson, Stan McCabe. Against Queensland in 1930-31 he opened with Bradman, scoring 56 to Bradman's 3; in the second innings he made 10 while Bradman, dropping to No.3, hit a world record 452.

Andrews moved to Queensland in 1931, scoring a hundred on his debut in 1932-33, and in 1934-35 he scored a career-best 253, sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 335 with Eric Bensted, seven runs shy of the then world record. He continued to play for the state until 1936.37.

Andrews' move to Brisbane coincided with Jackson's, the latter heading north on health grounds. Although Jackson continued to play grade cricket while dying from TB, he relied on a runner towards the end, and Andrews accompanied him in his final innings.
