 Profile

A product of Zimbabwe's development programme, Walter Chawaguta played one first-class game in 1996-97 for Mashonaland as a middle-order batsman, and that seemed to be the extent of his career as he moved into coaching, initially at Churchill School and then with Zimbabwe Under-19s and A team. He was touted as a possible national coach in 2005 but Kevin Curran got the job, after which he remained close to the national set-up. In 2004 he was briefly a selector, and in 2006-07, aged 34 and after a ten-year absence, he returned to play six more Logan Cup matches for Centrals, without any discernable success. Despite his relative inexperience, he was named as Zimbabwe coach in August, 2008.
