Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, has rubbished Ian Chappell's claims that he consulted Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist too often during the Ashes tour of England and said that he will continue to adopt similar strategies in the future.
Chappell, the legendary Australian captain, had criticised Ponting's captaincy during the series, which Australia lost 1-2 and surrendered the Ashes, saying that he needed to back his own judgment more.
But Ponting, who was preparing to lead Australia in the Super Series, was having none of it: "[I'm] not sure if that's the only series that Ian Chappell has watched," Ponting told ABC Sport, "but I've done that in every game that I've ever played for Australia and been captain. I've spoken to Shane and Adam and the senior players around me a lot because I know that my thoughts and ideas aren't always going to be right and I like to hear theirs. I'll continue to do that because I think it's worked really well so far and if he doesn't like it, too bad."
These remarks came in the wake of Matthew Hayden and Warne voicing their support for Ponting, who they believed was the best man to lead Australia. "He [Ponting] is his own man and he's done a pretty good job," said Warne. "I'm sure he will become better and I'm sure we all will."
