Casting Coach
Sanjay Suri, the bollywood actor, is getting ready to don the role of a cricket coach in a new movie, titled Salaam India. In unrelated news, his previous roles were that of a gay person and a gigolo. Wonder whether Greg Chappell will watch the movie.
Barry Richards doesn't dig a beer
The legendary batsman is clearly miffed with Castle Lager, the official sponsors of the South African Test squad. They held a dinner on December 14th, but only extended invitation to those who had played after 1991, i.e. after readmission. "I'm happy for the present lot, but it's disappointing that the contribution of those who served till 1969-70 isn't getting recognised and last night's function is an example. It's as if we never existed," Richards vented to The Telegraph."It's not just that I wasn't invited... What about a legend like Graeme Pollock? How can he not be called to a dinner for cricketers who've played Tests for South Africa? Each one of us has made a contribution, only that we played in a different era..." Can't argue with that, can you?
Famous last words?
"I just want to blow their heads away," that was Dale Steyn, ahead of the first Test. Nice non-violent thought, but in typical bully fashion forgot to check if he had slipped the safety catch before he fired, for barely half way into the first day the fire-spewer had to pull out with a quadriceps strain....
Groveling is back in fashion
"We shall make them grovel." Tony Greig made that infamous comment against West Indies. West Indies went on to thrash England. Now Kevin Pietersen thought fit to pluck those words from history. At the end of the second day, he boomed, "We did really well yesterday, especially with Steve Harmison running in like he did, and if he hits his straps, we'll make them grovel for every run." Next day, Adam Gilchrist biffed his way to the second-fastest Test century, Michael Clarke stroked a ton and Michael Hussey carved a hundred as Australia took a firm grip on the urn.
Orgasmic quote
Jamie How and Craig Cumming, of New Zealand, were at the crease when a user, Bill Black, pinged Cricinfo with a mail. "I just heard somebody say that the batsmen are Cumming and How." Echoes of another famous double entendre: "The bowler is Holding, the batsman's willey."
Even Kylie doesn't dig Ashley Giles
"We also go to see Kylie Minogue, who is fantastic," writes Giles in his tour diary. "I've never been a huge fan of Kylie's music, although I've always had a soft spot for her, but her show is excellent. We are within spitting distance of the stage, and I'm sure she looked at me a couple of times." That Monty is the new Beatles and dissing Giles is the new sport in England we know, but that Giles's stocks would drop so low comes as a surprise!
Yuvraj dons grease paint
The batsman, currently out of cricket action due to an injury, will star in a flick Love Story. "I want to do roles that are symbolic of social, cultural, political, economic and historical significance. The role should have an impact and be meaningful to the society," Yuvraj Singh was quoted as saying in the Times of India. Er.... hmm... er...
The big bad brawl
It was a birthday bash. Literally. In classic Hindi filmy style Yuvraj found himself embroiled in a brawl with an uninvited guest. The party was allegedly filled with Wham, Thwack, and the other Batman and Robin comic-strip expressions and it ended with black and blue eyes.
Big fat idea
Darren Lehmann has a well-rounded advice for his South Australian colleague Mark Cosgrove. Lose weight. "At the moment he's making starts for us and not going on, so his fitness is an issue, he needs to work harder on that, which he knows, and I'm sure you'll see bigger scores in the next few weeks. I think he'd say he's done enough, but he probably needs to do more, and that's just an honest opinion."
Quote of the week
"I think he thinks he's better than he is, and I think he's right." That was Geoffrey Boycott on Kevin Pietersen. Take a break, have a drink, come back and read the quote again. If you don't get it, take a break, have a ...
