Third Associate to replace Zimbabwe in Twenty20

Zimbabwe's withdrawal from the ICC World Twenty20 in England in 2009 has opened the way for a third Associate county to be invited from next month's ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers.
The leading Associates meet in Belfast between August 2 and 4 with the top two gained an automatic place in the main event the following June.
"The third associate will come through the qualifiers in August this year," Samir Inamdar, the chairman of the ICC's Affiliates and Associates, told Cricinfo. "I have had a conversation with Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, who has agreed that it is logical to replace Zimbabwe with an Associate."

Guernsey granted Associate status

Guernsey have become the 34th country to be granted Associate membership of the ICC after their application was unanimously approved during the annual conference in Dubai.
Vanuatu had also applied but they failed to meet the necessary playing requirements as they had not beaten two existing Associates in competition. Mozambique withdrew their application.
A further three countries from the Europe region - Bulgaria, Estonia and Turkey - were granted Affiliate status, taking the ICC's total member count to 104.

Inamdar wins election to head Affiliates/Associates

Samir Inamdar, the chairman of Cricket Kenya, was elected as the chairman of the Associate and Affiliate members of the ICC at the annual conference in Dubai.
Inamdar, who was already one of the three representatives of the non Test-playing countries on the ICC executive board, replaces H.H. Tunku Imran who stood down because of his commitments with the IOC.
Inamdar, who polled 26 votes, is joined on the ICC executive board, by Imran Khwaja (Singapore, 22 votes) and Neil Speight (Bermuda, 21). Rene van Iashort from the Netherlands received 18 votes while Israel’s Stanley Pearman, who was a sitting representative, finished bottom of the pile with 16 votes.

Thailand season draws to a close

Fortune CC will play top of the table team Bangkok 11 in the B Division final on Sunday July 13. After a delayed start, the season is coming to an end.
Southerners 20/20 Challenge finals are on weekend 12th and 13th at Harrow International School. Siam Parrots will play BCC in the Cup Final. Shield and Bowl finalist still to be decided though Punjab and Asia United will play for the Global Turf Plate Final. Southerners have raised about 15,000 baht from this tournament to go towards junior cricket in the rural areas
of Thailand.

Uganda off to a flying start

Emmanuel Nakaana’s 58 guided Uganda to a ten-wicket win over Rwanda in the opening round of the ICC East Africa Under-17 tournament. In the day’s other game, Kenya thrashed defending champions Tanzania by 100 runs.

Vora appointed NPCA chairman

Almost three years late, the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association has finally elected a new board, paving the way for the overdue Cricket Kenya elections.
The NPCA saga has blighted Kenyan cricket for several years with a virtually dysfunctional board failing to holding meetings or produce accounts. The failure to implement a new constitution, as agreed back in 2005, led to a postponement in national elections. The new NPCA executive now has 60 days to put their house in order.
Bipin Vora won the vote to become the new chairman by 29-19, while other officials appointed include: Nilesh Lakhani (vice-chairman), John Moyi (secretary), Harshes Patel (assistant secretary), Kalpesh Solanki (treasurer), Shashikant Sanghani (assistant treasurer), Shahid Bwibo (fixtures secretary), and Michael Kibe (assistant fixtures secretary). The committee is completed by Rajesh Patel, Seiffudin Maloo, Oduor Ambala and Sheikh Najani.
Rumours that former KCA chairman Sharad Ghai would mount a comeback bid amounted to nothing. He did not even attend the meeting.

Future bright beyond the Test world

Next week's ICC annual get-together promises to have more than its fair share of politicking, posturing and controversy. But, unless there is a major about-turn, it should also be a watershed for the Associates and Affiliates.
In 2009, income from the ICC's six-year media deal with ESPN-Star, worth over US$1 billion, kicks in, and while the game's big boys will still keep the lion's share, the rest will see substantial increases in their incomes.

Rwanda frustrated by exams

Rwanda’s Under-17 manager Emma Byiringiro has expressed frustration about the team’s preparations ahead of next month’s ICC/ACA U-17 tournament. The New Times quoted Byiringiro as saying: “It’s very difficult to have the boys during the course of the week because they are busy doing their exams. So this has limited us to weekends, which is not enough time for them to perfect their game.”
Despite facing Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Byiringiro was upbeat. “Kenya and Uganda are favorites but we shall give them a good run for their money. But more certainly, we shall target to beat Tanzania. They are ICC Associate members but we humiliated them during last year’s ICC U-15 regional tournament and we are looking to do it again with the U-17s this year,”
The tournament is being held from July 1 to 5 in Kampala.

Morgan pulls out of tri-series

Ireland's squad to face New Zealand and Scotland in the tri-series next week has been further depleted by the withdrawal of Eoin Morgan.
Yesterday Morgan confirmed to Paul Simmons, the Ireland coach, that he had made himself unavailable, prompting Ireland to call up Chris Doughtery, the Bready opening batsman.

Netherlands announce squad to face Ireland

Netherlands have announced a squad of twelve for their Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland in Rotterdam on July 9.
They miss the services of Eric Szwarczynski, whose broken toe has yet to recover but, more crucially, Ryan ten Doeschate who is committed to Essex. There was a recall for Nick Statham, however, who was part of the Netherlands team who lost to Scotland last year.
Netherlands only have an outside chance of reaching the final of the competition, unless they secure maximum points against Ireland and Kenya.

Weakened Scotland head west

Scotland will travel to Bermuda and Canada next month without several front-line players who are being rested for other matches later in the summer.
Scotland captain Ryan Watson, along with Gavin Hamilton, Craig Wright, Glenn Rogers and John Blain, have not been included in the 13-man squad which will play Intercontinental Cup matches in Bermuda (July 10-13) and Canada (July 16-19).
But, after discussions with the selectors, they will leave behind a group of experienced players who are being ‘rested’ in preparation for other major matches later in July and August.
“Although Scotland cannot now hope to win the Cup itself, we will certainly take these matches seriously, and the players know that they represent an excellent platform for their talents,” Peter Steindl, Scotland’s coach, said. “For our own ranking in the global game, we aim to win both matches."
Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, added: "It is vital that we build strength in depth among our international squads - particularly with next year’s World Cup qualifying tournament in mind."

Brunei run training camp for women cricketers

The Brunei Darussalam Cricket Association (BDCA) held its inaugural training came for their Under-19 women this month.
ACC's Development Officer for Brunei, Aminul Islam, conducted the four-day session and was very impressed with the "enthusiasm and spirit shown by the girls".
"All of them took the game very seriously and also coped fantastically well to their very first cricketing session. They will have to train hard for the ACC U-19 Women's Championship in November but I'm sure they can do well," said Aminul.

USA National Junior Tournament begins

The USA National Junior Tournament got underway on Wednesday, and Dreamcricket.com has a full round-up of the action.
On the first day, USA Falcons won both their matches convincingly in the Under 15 category. In their first match, they inflicted a massive defeat on CCL by bowling them out for 52 runs in 19.2 overs and then reaching their target in 8.4 overs. In their second match against NCCA Mustangs, Falcons put up a whopping 148 runs in 25 overs and bowled out their rivals for 50 runs in 17 overs. J Gerber scored 15 not out and 54 for Falcons in these two matches. Brandon D took 4 for 10 against the Mustangs and Domaille took 3 for 19. Adithya Nagaraja claiming 2 for 14 and 3 for 8 respectively against CCL and NCCA.
WIth the likes of J Gerber, Abhijit Joshi and Steven Taylor (the last two played in the ICC Americas team) in the batting department and with the formidable bowling strength of Adithya Nagaraja and Brandon D, the Falcons are expected to pose the strongest challenge yet to CCA, who are the defending champions.

Changing rooms littered by used syringes; poor behaviour from players and a lack of respect. Those are just three of the criticisms that umpires have reported during Bermuda's domestic season this year. The Royal Gazette reports on all the grizzly details:
Umpires have also reported continued poor time-keeping when it comes to the toss, meaning games often start and finish late, and there has also been a failure by many clubs to provide replacement balls.
The situation has got so bad that the BCB are now considering what sanctions they can take against the worst offenders.
"We will be writing to the clubs to remind them of the standards of behaviour that we expect in the game," said vice president Allen Richardson.
"If that doesn't work then we will publicly name and shame the clubs involved, telling the public exactly what has gone on.

A fascinating report in The National highlights that while the IPL might bring massive rewards, most international players, especially those outside the top flight, live a more modest existence.
UAE allrounder Khurram Khan reckons that it costs him money to play as he has to take unpaid leave from his job with Emirates airline.
"He might play a match, then be flying out on the night of the game to Melbourne on a 20-hour flight. Just imagine how hard that is. If he plays a four-day match, he would almost certainly then have a four-day job with his work to Melbourne, or Tokyo, or Jakarta.”

Uganda's Kamyuka heads to Canada

Uganda allrounder Kenneth Kamyuka has been signed by the Toronto District Cricket Association champions Brampton Masters. Kamyuka, 26, left for Canada last week.
“I last played professional cricket a couple of years ago and this is definitely going to be a whole new challenge for me. I’m enjoying good form and I’m ready for the challenge as a professional."

Judd injects passion into Scotland

Neil Drysdale reports on the unexpected return of the Australian, Tony Judd, to his coaching role with Scotland.
These words embody Judd's optimistic personality and one need only talk to Saltires stalwart, Paul Hoffman, to discover why he was held in such lofty regard during his earlier tenure. "Tony wears his heart on his sleeve, he doesn't pull any punches, and he is ultra-competitive, but above all, he never blames a player if they are doing their best and aiming to be adventurous," said Hoffmann, who retired at the end of 2007, but may be poised to participate in the Twenty20 event in Ireland. "I think Pete and Tony will make a terrific combination, and the more good coaches we have in Scotland, the better. But the one thing about Tony is that he won't tolerate complacency or laziness, and he is a demanding guy. Sentiment doesn't come into it, and I think we all share the opinion that it is high time we followed Ireland's example and beat one of cricket's big guns."

No Associate status for Vanuatu

The ICC has confirmed that Vanuatu's application for Associate membership will not be put forward at the annual conference in late June. Although they met almost all the criteria, they had not beaten three other Associate sides, as required. It was expected that they would achieve this during the ICC World Cricket League Division Five competition in Jersey last month, but they failed to win a game.

ICC expands World Cricket League

The ICC has confirmed that the World Cricket League will be expanded from five to eight divisions after the 2009 World Cup Qualifiers.
The WCL was launched in 2007 with the dual aims of providing more meaningful cricket to more Associates and Affiliates, and also giving a direct path which enabled any country to achieve the ultimate goal of playing in the World Cup.
The addition of three more divisions has been made possible by the substantial increase in funding available once the ICC’s new media deal kicks in next year. It is believed that Division Six and Seven will run in 2008 and Division Eight in 2009.
The extra leagues, which should be approved by the ICC when it meets for its annual meeting in Dubai at the end of the month, will be drawn up based on results in regional competitions.

Kenya's three-day become a two-day

Cricket Kenya has had to reschedule its planned three-day league because of the lack of availability of players.
Due to start last Friday, the event will now run on the next three weekends with game restricted to two days. Tom Tikolo, the board's chief executive, explained that this move had been forced on them by the "unavailability of many players who are students and/or working". He added that it was expected that at least 100 overs would be bowled on each day and that the matches would still be two-innings affairs.
The move will be a bitter blow to Cricket Kenya who had been looking to the competition to highlight any emerging talent outside the tried-and-known national squad.
The tournament had initially be scheduled for January and had been intended to coincide with holidays, making the availability for schoolboys much easier. But the violence which followed the disputed presidential elections put paid to that.

Conference demands 'remorse' from suspended six

The saga of the Midwest Cricket Conference’s suspension of six players rumbles on with an announcement that it required the players to email the “management” expressing “unequivocal remorse” and giving an assurance that they will “not in future, violate any of the Rules and Regulations of the MCC”.
The six have been accused of playing for a rival Chicago league in a regional competition in May.
They were allowed to play in last weekend’s matches “in the spirit of getting on with game” but critics of the board’s action have been quick to point out that the regulations that were allegedly breached were only published on the eve of the competition.
Referring to the case of 15-year-old Abhijit Joshi, who last month represented the USA at the Clico International Under-15 event in the Caribbean, one local cricketer told Cricinfo that it was “preposterous and arrogant” to expect someone so young to give the statement expected by the MCC.

More cricket on TV in Canada

The Asian Television Network (ATN) has announced an agreement to televise games from the
English County Championship and the Tests between England and New Zealand, and England and South Africa. Games will be carried on the network’s CBN channel.
Meanwhile in Quebec, students at Carlyle School in Mount Royal are now enjoying a game of cricket at lunch break after putting pressure on school officials to start a school team. It all started when students brought a cricket bat to school one day and now the sport is part of the school’s physical education program.

Winter academy for Chile

Chilean National Development Officer, Patricio Caamano, is currently finalising plans to run
a high performance program throughout the winter months for the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-19 national team squads. It will be the first time that Chile has run such a program and is expected to see a vast improvement by the Chilean junior squads in international competition for the 2008-09 season.
The academy will be based at Chile’s principal training facility, Las Casa Roja, and will see the three squads working on batting, bowling, fielding, fitness and tactics. The academy will run from June to September.

If we could stop people smoking weed we would have triple the amount of players available. If you can't give up marijuana to play for your country and reach the pinnacle of your sport then you have a serious, serious problem.

Back-to-back twenty20 wins for Netherlands

Netherlands won Friday’s back-to-back Twenty20 internationals against Denmark. The games, which replaced a planned ODI, were agreed to assist the Dutch in their preparations for August’s Associates Twenty20 competition in Ireland.
In the first game, Denmark made a reasonable 153 but Netherlands eased home by six wickets.
Netherlands batted first in the second match and exploited a weak Danish attack to plunder 239, Peter Borren leading the charge with 88, with stout support from Tim de Groot (60). Michael Pedersen held Denmark’s reply together with an unbeaten 94 but they managed only 182 for 2, losing by 57 runs.

Netherlands go down to Denmark

Denmark beat Netherlands by eight runs in a one-day international in Brøndby.
Denmark’s opening pair - Freddie Klokker and Michael Pedersen – put on 212 for the first wicket as they made 264. Klokker finished with 119 and Pederson 81, but once they had been separated the innings fell apart, Tim de Grooth ripping through the middle order with 5 for 43.
Netherlands maintained a steady pace in their chase, but Lars Hedegaard put the skids under the lower order with 5 for 40. Even so, they needed a very gettable 12 off the final over.

Vanuatu announce major sponsor

Digicel, the telecommunications operator, will sponsor the Vanuatu national side as part of a three-year partnership with the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA).

Australia Navy take on Samoans in Twenty20

Every few months Australian Navy ships dock in the Apia Harbour for a few days rest from sea. This time they headed to the Garden Cricket Ovals in Faleata to challenge a team of Samoans in a Twenty20.
