Surrey confirm Butcher departure

A week after it was widely reported, Surrey have confirmed that Alan Butcher has been sacked as coach following the club's Championship relegation.

They failed to win a match, finishing bottom of Division One, and also had a poor season in one-day cricket.

The club said they are "currently in the process of agreeing the finer points of his departure" and a full statement will follow in the coming days.

The search for Butcher's successor will begin when Gus Mackay, the new managing director of cricket who arrived from Sussex, takes office on October 1.
