Australia, without Shane Warne, were regrouping after a comprehensive loss to India in their last Test outing. Pakistan, under the leadership of Aamer Sohail, were considered formidable opponents at home, having beaten the West Indies 3-0 in their last home series. The Test series then was an unqualified success for the Australians, particularly their captain, whose memorable unbeaten 334 capped a great 1-0 series win. Both teams traveled to Bangladesh for the Wills International Cup, then returned to Pakistan for three one-day internationals. Australia, under the captaincy of Steve Waugh, took the first two games with ease and won the third with a world record total.
