 Profile

Horace Brearley was a right-hand batsman who played once for Yorkshire before World War Two and twice for Middlesex after it. He also played hockey for Yorkshire. From 1937 to 1946 he taught at King Edward VII School in Sheffield, serving as an instructor in the RNVR from 1941. He moved to London in 1946 to take up a teaching post at City of London School. His two outings for Middlesex were in June 1949, the last against Somerset in a side which included 16-year-old Fred Titmus making his debut; 33 years later Titmus's final appearance was in a Middlesex team led by Mike Brearley, Horace's son. One former pupil taught by Brearley recalled that "if Mike went into bat during his lesson, he would take us off to the TV room to watch". At the time of his death he was the oldest living Yorkshire player.
