Hampshire amass 480 on final practise day at Canterbury

Vic Isaacs

April 12, 2004

Hampshire concluded their pre-season friendly action at Canterbury by amassing a mammoth 480-8 in their 90 overs, in response to Kent's 393 the previous day.

The highlight of the run feast on a warm Easter Monday was a scintillating 142 from Derek Kenway that included 25 fours and two sixes and a more patient but no less important 74 from Will Kendall.

Shaun Udal joined in the fun by blasting 66 not out, an innings of just 42 balls that included six sixes and six fours.

There was also contributions down the line from Michael Brown (48), John Crawley (27), James Hamblin (26) and reserve wicket-keeper Tom Burrows (31 not out).

The action was watched by new captain Shane Warne and fellow Australian Michael Clarke, who had driven down from Southampton to meet up with their new team-mates.

Min Patel was Kent's best bowler with 2-58.

Yesterday, when Kent batted, Alex Louden hit a century while the home side captain David Fulton and opening partner Michael Carberry posted a stand of 147 for the first wicket.

There were wickets each for Alan Mullally, Dimi Mascarenhas, James Tomlinson, Udal and Lawrence Prittipaul.

This was the last of Hampshire's pre-season exercises as they now run in to the opening day of the Frizzell County Championship Division Two campaign against Durham at the Rose Bowl on Friday (16th April).
