Stan Montgomery the former Glamorgan batsman and Cardiff City has died today

Stan Montgomery, the former Glamorgan batsman and Cardiff City footballer died on October 5th in hospital in Cardiff after a short illness at the age of 80.

Montgomery had a successful career as a centre-half with Hull, Southend United and Cardiff City before joining the Glamorgan staff in 1949.

In 1948 Montgomery joined Cardiff City, for whom he played 231 times until 1955, before playing for a season with Newport County, and subsequently Llanelli in the Welsh leagues.

Montgomery made his county cricket debut for Glamorgan in 1949 after some prolific feats with the bat for Barry C.C. In his first season with Glamorgan, the tall right hander secured a place in the county`s middle-order, and he marked his arrival in the first-class game with a career best innings of 117 against Hampshire at Bournemouth.

This came during a partnership of 264 for the fifth wicket with Maurice Robinson - at the time, this was the club's best stand for that wicket, and this record still stands today, some 51 years later.
