UAE v Bermuda, Intercontinental Cup, Abu Dhabi, 4th day

Pitiful Bermuda slump to UAE

Cricinfo staff

November 11, 2007

UAE 143 & 449 (Arshad 185, Saqib 142) beat Bermuda 311 & 142 (Irfan Ahmed 3-35) by 138 runs
Scorecard

Bermuda slumped to another heavy defeat, this time at the hands of UAE who recorded their first win in this season's Intercontinental Cup series. Bermuda are now bottom of the table after four matches, with just six points.

UAE resumed on 409 for 7 but were quickly dispatched by Bermuda's bowlers who dismissed them for 449. This left Bermuda chasing 282 - a difficult, but not impossible target on a pitch (judging by the application UAE showed on the second and third days) was good for batting.

They crumbled to 33 for 5 after Irfan Ahmed picked up three quick wickets and, this time, not even David Hemp could dig them out. Irvine Romaine cracked 32 from 45 and Malachi Jones offered 24 at a run-a-ball, but UAE's bowlers shared around the wickets to dismiss them for a pitiful 143 inside 40 overs.

For both sides, this match was a dead-rubber with just pride to play for. But nevertheless, it was a useful warm-up for UAE who travel to Namibia for the World Cricket League Division Two later this month. Bermuda, on the other hand, have a lot of soul searching to do.

Population base has nothing to do with it, Bermuda have cricketers who can perform well at this level, as they say poor preparation leads to poor performance, the Bermuda Cricket Board despite their financial means haven't even provided a dedicated cricket field that our team could train on - our women have world cup qualifiers soon, and our under-19 play in the youth world cup in Malaysia in February neither team has a dedicated field with a turf wicket on which to train - a pathetic situation which they were warned about months ago - nothing was done thus the results speak for themselves!!!

I'm not so sure that Bermuda underestimated UAE, I just really don't think that they have enough players of quality, aside from David Hemp, who showed them how a county player bats. Some experience in the 2nd XI county championship for their younger players would help, but untimately, if their government is pumping in millions to the game, it is their national sport, and they still can't beat sides like UAEthen there is little hope, as their population base, from which to draw players is simply too small.
