Profile
Tony MacGibbon spearheaded New Zealand's attack from 1950 to 1958, and proved himself a tremendous tryer in a lean period for NZ cricket. A fast-medium bowler with a longish run, he could swing the ball either way and used his 6ft 5ins frame to make it lift awkwardly. He was also a useful late-order batsman and a superb slip fielder. On the 1953-54 tour of South African tour he was crippled by enteritis, but still took 22 Test wickets. His 35 runs in a low-scoring match contributed considerably to New Zealand's maiden Test victory, against West Indies in 1955-56, while a vigorous 66 at Old Trafford was the highest score by a New Zealander in the one-sided England series of 1958. At the end of that tour, MacGibbon remained in England to read Civil Engineering at Durham University, and only briefly returned to New Zealand's team. Christopher Martin-Jenkins
