Duleep Trophy round-up

Ganguly ton lifts East Zone

Cricinfo staff

November 6, 2006

Day 3 East Zone 215 for 4 (Ganguly 118*) trail North Zone 504 by 289 runs
Scorecard

Sourav Ganguly was undoubtedly the star of the third day of the Duleep Trophy match between East Zone and North Zone at Guwahati, as his undefeated 118 lifted East Zone to 215 for 4. Ganguly shared useful stands with Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Deep Dasgupta to frustrate the North Zone bowlers, who managed just two wickets in the day.

Resuming on 22 for 2, Ganguly and Jhunjhunwala (32) added 102 for the third wicket before Ashish Nehra broke through for the first time in the morning. Jhunjhunwala's innings of 32 included seven fours. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Ganguly then added 40, before Shukla was stumped for 15 off Rajesh Sharma, trying to accelerate the scoring. Ganguly's knock included 12 fours and three sixes, and his stay at the wicket kept East Zone in the hunt, chasing North's tall first-innings score of 504. Unfortunately, only 67 overs were possible as bad light forced an early finish with East Zone still trailing by 289 runs.

Day 3 South Zone 266 and 333 for 4 (Uthappa 141, Karthik 95) lead Sri Lanka A 327 by 272 runs
Scorecard

Robin Uthappa scored an authoritative 141 to take South Zone to a commanding position on the third day of their Duleep Trophy match against Sri Lanka A at Kolkata. Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik (95) took the game away from the opposition with an opening stand of 167, helping South Zone extend their lead to 272 with six wickets remaining.

Karthik scored 11 boundaries in his knock, falling to Akalanka Ganegama - who bagged all four wickets to fall - just five short of a deserving ton. Uthappa and captain VVS Laxman then added a brisk 125 in just over 25 overs, taking the score to 292. Uthappa's fluent knock came off just 190 balls and included 15 boundaries. Ganegama dismissed Laxman soon after for 45, giving Thilan Samaraweera his third catch of the day. Ambati Rayudu and Venugopal Rao took the score to 333, and immediately after Rayudu's dismissal, the umpires decided to call it off early due to bad light.
