As England's tour falls apart around them Andrew Flintoff has decided to stay with the squad throughout the Test series following his sudden elevation to captain. He had been planning to return home for the birth of his second child, which coincides with the third Test at Mumbai.

With Michael Vaughan returning home for further treatment on his knee injury and Marcus Trescothick already back in the UK with his family, Flintoff has been handed the captaincy ahead of Andrew Strauss. He told BBC Radio Five Live: "It is a chance to lead the team and my country. The situation dictates what I will be doing."

The England management have said that even though Vaughan is leaving the tour he could yet return to India later in the series, although the chances of this appear to be slim. With uncertainty still surround Trescothick's situation Flintoff could be leading England throughout the series.
