Tendulkar's nineties jinx

After being dismissed in the nineties just ten times in his first 17 years of one-day cricket, the jinx has struck Sachin Tendulkar five times over the last five months. Three of those knocks have been 99s, which makes Tendulkar the only batsman to be dismissed at that score thrice. (Click here for the list of 99s in ODIs, and here for a complete list of Tendulkar's 90s.) He has fallen victim to the Nervous Nineties 15 times in ODIs, easily a record. Nathan Astle, Aravinda de Silva and Grant Flower have managed it nine times, though each was unbeaten on a couple of occasions.

It was also the fifth time Tendulkar fell in the nineties against Pakistan; the other teams who have dismissed him in the nineties are England, South Africa and Sri Lanka (three times each) and Australia (once).

Tendulkar's continual struggle to get past the nineties also means that he has now failed to get to a hundred in his last 26 ODIs - his last century was against West Indies in Vadodara in January 2007. It's his second-longest stretch without a hundred since he scored his first one - he went 32 games without one after he scored his 12th.

The lack of three-figure scores hasn't affected his batting average, though, since he has scored 11 fifties in those 26 games, helping him maintain a healthy average of 44.92 during this period.

With this match, his 404th, Tendulkar also became the most-capped player in ODIs, overtaking Sanath Jayasuriya, who has played 403. Interestingly, had Tendulkar possessed a 100% record in converting his nineties into hundreds, he would have become the first to reach the milestone of 100 centuries in international cricket. Tendulkar currently has 41 ODI hundreds and 37 in Tests.

India reached the total of 321 for 9 thanks to some erratic bowling from Pakistan, with 41 extras - the highest in an innings in an India-Pakistan match - and 31 in wides, also the worst when the two teams have met. India conceded 26 extras, making the total of 67 for the match the most in India-Pakistan ODIs, equalling the 67 in an ODI in Lahore in 2004. Pakistan chased the target of 322 with one ball to spare, thus completing their highest successful run-chase in ODIs, beating the previous best when they chased 316, also against India in Ahmedabad. It was the fourth time that India have failed to defend a 300-plus score in an ODI, with three of them coming against Pakistan.

Younis Khan powered Pakistan's chase with his 117, his first ODI hundred against India. This was Younis' third hundred, in 158 ODIs.
