Piyush Chawla made an immediate impact despite making his first-class debut as a 17-year-old, and at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup the legspinning allrounder lived up to his reputation - one built on dismissing Sachin Tendulkar with a googly during the Challenger Series - and finished as India's leading wicket taker. He already has wonderful control of his variations and is certainly not afraid to give the ball some air. No slouch with the bat, either, and there is a formidable allrounder in the making. His U-19 performances were rewarded with a Test debut against England at Mohali. He couldn't hold on to his Test spot but received a call-up to the one-day side for India's tour of Bangladesh in May 2007. He took three wickets on debut and fourteen over the summer during India's tour of Ireland and England, didn't get a game during the ICC World Twenty in South Africa, and was then dropped, only to be recalled for the CB Series in January 2008.
