 Profile

After a breakthrough season in 2004-05, injuries and a lack of wickets threatened to stop Brett Geeves from becoming a permanent member of Tasmania's teams. However, he solved that problem last summer, playing all but one of the state's Pura and FR Cup games, and won a surprise promotion into Australia's squad for the off-season series against Bangladesh. A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Geeves was the equal-leading wicket-taker in the one-day competition - his 15 came at an average of 25.20 - and he was Man of the Match in the Tigers' thrilling win in the final. In the Pura Cup he managed a strong haul of 37 victims and became a crucial part of the campaign.

The previous season Geeves played six Pura Cup matches and removed 12 batsmen at 63.83. By the end of that summer Ben Hilfenhaus, Damien Wright, Adam Griffith, Luke Butterworth and Brendan Drew were all ahead of Geeves in the fully-fit attack. He also made seven one-day appearances for eight wickets at 40.5. Geeves can deliver in-swinging yorkers that are particularly dangerous in limited-overs affairs and he picked up 20 wickets in the 2004-05 ING Cup, the second most in the competition behind Shaun Tait, and was a key performer in Tasmania's trophy success. His first-class debut arrived in that season and he collected 23 victims before a knee problem the following year limited his output. A former national under-19 and Academy representative, Geeves is an improving lower-order batsman who produced two handy Pura Cup half-centuries in 2006-07.
