In a strange twist of events, Jai Prakash Yadav, the allrounder from Railways, has been chosen as the replacement for VRV Singh, who joined the Indian squad late last night but failed a fitness test.
The selection committee picked VRV Singh, the fast bowler from Punjab, in the squad, after they met at Ahmedabad two days back by presuming him to be fit. However, John Gloster, the Indian team physio, examined his condition and found that he had a inversion injury to his left ankle with associated bruising. He also felt that he would take a couple of weeks to get completely fit.
The strange fact is that the selectors picked him despite his having missed a previous Duleep Trophy game in Mumbai. The reason given was that the selectors didn't know the extent of his injury and thought they would let Gloster examine him and pass a verdict. But one would think that it is the prerogative of the North Zone selector to cover all the bases.
The end result, though, is that Yadav, who might have got a chance to play at Rajkot, will almost surely miss the game and will have to wait till the final game at Baroda.
