Posted by DineshIyer on January 23 2008, 00:51 AM GMT I am from India and am not up to date with English cricket. But having seen the English team over the past few years, I get the impression that for most English players its Ashes or bust! In 2006, they seemed more focussed on the Ashes rather than the ICC One-Day tournament in India. Their preps for the Ashes will be more intense than for an ODI World Cup! (which doesnt speak much considering they got wiped out 5-0). For Indian players, an Ind-Pak series of great importance but doesnt mean that they tune out when they play SA or Aus or NZ. As Nasses Hussain said, the english players need to toughen up physically and mentally and start showing some intent. When was the last time England won a test series in India or SL or even SA?? Cmon England ... go back to the glory days of Gooch, Gatting, Gower, Botham et all! Posted by tsg000 on January 22 2008, 18:24 PM GMT Couldn't agree with you more...will be interesting to see how well Giles does his job with objectivity, considering his relationship with many of the current players including the 2 captains...someone like Boycott who has the acumen to spot talent as well as objectivity should have been part of the selection panel. It will be interesting to see how this panel does...if they don't get it right, hopefully they will not hang around for as long as Graveney did... Posted by Growler7 on January 22 2008, 14:00 PM GMT Couldn't agree more on the Strauss selection. Also some very interesting views on the appointment of Ashley Giles. I think the treatment of the wicket keepers has been over-stated - at the end of the day, we haven't got a Gilchrist, and when a keeper has been elevated to the test team, they have often under-performed, so should have been replaced. Posted by shyamd on January 22 2008, 11:55 AM GMT Scyld Berry - I read his article on the Daily Telegraph and found it a big joke when he justified Australia playing a 4-man pace attack. Did he see the result of that match against India? Symonds & Michael Clarke bowled more than Tait! Under NO circumstances will Australia repeat that mistake. Australia will find a spinner and he will play as the 4th bowler in England. Name me one other team that plays 4 pace bowlers as their front line. Even South Africa dont! There is simply no variety that way. Symonds and Clarke cannot be relied upon to offer Spin options against England. Vaughan, Bell and Pietersen will be licking their lips if that were the case. Either Brad Hogg will excel or Australia will start giving younger boys like Nathan Hauritz an opportunity. They are Australian Selectors - not English! Posted by captainjamiehunter on January 22 2008, 11:23 AM GMT Another slating of Ashley Giles. Come on Tim, this isn't up to your usual high standard. Where's the same treatment of James Whitaker? He played one test for England and scored 11. Big deal. Did OK at Leicester including as manager but then left and had 3 years out of the game. Must have been some unsavoury politics there - why not explore that? The New Zealand squad was picked before this announcement if memory serves. So Giles had nothing to do with Strauss' recall. If you're questioning the impartiality of a selector please have the guts to do it openly. Just say "I don't trust Giles' judgement for when things get tough". Or are you putting a case to be one of the next England spinners?
