Americas Under-19 World Cup qualifiers, 4th day

Young Qadir spins Canada to facile win

Cricinfo staff

August 18, 2007

Canada and Bermuda will go head-to-head for a place in next year's Under-19 World Cup with both teams having won all three of their matches in the Americas Under-19s tournament at King City.

A remarkable spell of 5 for 6 from Arsalan Qadir decimated Cayman Islands for 77 to give Canada their third successive win. Choosing to field, Canada's bowlers struck with the second ball of the match, Kevin James bowling Darren Cato for a duck. James, bowling with good rhythm, then bowled the danger man, Ramon Sealey, but Sacha de Alwis played some useful strokes after he was dropped at second slip.

But it was the introduction of Qadir which turned the momentum, picking up two wickets in his opening over - including de Alwis for 26 - as Cayman Islands offered scant resistance, lasting a mere 25.2 overs. Ruvindu Gunasekera's 36, smashing seven fours, sealed Canada's victory by nine wickets, the home side reaching their target in the 10th over.

In the day's other match Bahamas, put into bat, was bowled out for 113 in 37.2 overs and Argentina reached the target in 26.2 overs for the loss of six wickets. Tomas Birnie took 4 for 23 as Bahamas struggled for any momentum in their innings, while Pablo Siracusa, 3 for 19, Ramiro Delgado chipped in.

The top scorer in the innings was extras with 43, 38 of which were wides, while Jonathan Barry was the only batsman to reach double figures with 38.

Although Argentina made fairly heavy weather of the target they knocked off the runs with more than 23 overs to spare.
