SAA Provincial Challenge, Round Five, 2nd day

Northerns closing in on victory

Cricinfo staff

November 3, 2005

Northerns are closing in on victory over Griqualand West following a dominant performance at Kimberley. Aaron Phangiso clubbed 63 off 49 balls with four sixes after the top order had threatened to waste the overnight platform of 175 for 1. The bowlers then produced an attacking display with Lucas Manzini returning 4 for 22, leaving Northerns to chase 122. Despite losing an early wicket they enter the final day requiring another 92 to win.

A powerful batting performance put North West in command against Easterns. Driaan Steyn and Juan le Roux struck impressive centuries as North West amassed a lead of 81 before having a crack at the Easterns top order. It was a worthwhile exercise as Friedel de Wet nipped out two wickets before the close, leaving Easterns with a final day struggle.

Wallace Albertyn played a captain's innings to keep Boland in their clash against Western Province, but WP were still in command at the end of the second day with a lead of 197. Albertyn made 67 in nearly three hours after Boland slipped to 130 for 7. Rory Kleinveldt finished with the best figures of 4 for 73 before the WP top order built a sizeable lead. Alistair Gray is closing in on a maiden century, after striking seven boundaries in his unbeaten 69.

Only seven and a half overs were possible at East London, where Border reached 25 without loss against Zimbabwe Under-23 before the weather halted proceedings.

There was no play on the second day at Port Elizabeth between KwaZulu Natal and Eastern Province.
