SAA Provincial Challenge, Round 12, 3rd day

Bennett's five spins Border to victory

Cricinfo staff

February 11, 2006

Five wickets from Bevan Bennett and an unbeaten fifty from Carl Bradfield led Border to a comprehensive six-wicket win over Boland. Starting the third day on 115 for 3, Bennett took 5 for 21 as Boland collapsed to 203 all out. Waylain September (30) and Willem Louw (41*) were the only major contributors, after Dawid Malan (64) had fallen without adding to his overnight score. This left Border the relatively simple task of knocking off 128 runs, a feat they managed without considerable alarm - although they lost four wickets in the process. September grabbed three quick wickets, but it was too little too late; led by Bradfield (57*) and Bennett (30), Border reached their target in the 25th over.

Derrin Bassage's maiden hundred anchored Western Province's successful run-chase to beat Eastern Province by nine wickets. Eastern Province's desperate performance yesterday - they were dismissed for 122 with Siraaj Conrad picking up 6 for 45 - meant their opponent's eventual target was a meagre 172. Bassage, with 41 in the first innings, played sensibly for his unbeaten 108, starring in partnerships of 61 with Alistair Gray and 111 with Bob Homani (25*). Western Province top Pool B with a game in hand, and hold a lead of 10 points over second-placed Border.

A brisk fifty from Thando Bula injected some life into the rain-affected match between Griqualand West and North West, before the game petered out into a draw. Juan le Roux (42) fell to the second ball of the day without adding to his overnight score, soon followed by Mohammad Akoojee (80). Riyaadh Bhayat (39*) was joined by Bula and together they forged a 91-run partnership for North West, who were eventually dismissed for 327 to hold an 82-run first-innings lead. Adrian McLaren then struck a powerful 72 for Griqualand, but the game ended midway through the 47th over, with Griqualand on 190 for 4.
