At the end of the day, Sanath Jayasuriya's century - 115 off 101 balls with four sixes - could give you the impression that it was a typical blast from the start. It wasn't. The bowlers ended up being carted all over Providence as the strike-rate indicates but the beginning was very different.
Jayasuriya was deprived of much of the strike during the Powerplays and it wasn't until the seventh over that he hit his first boundary. He faced just 19 balls in the opening ten overs and by the end of the 15th he had 14 off 33 deliveries. His low strike-rate was largely due to Daren Powell, who bowled 19 deliveries in all against Jayasuriya and conceded only nine runs.
It was only after Brian Lara took the final Powerplay that Jayasuriya cut loose. He hammered 36 runs off his next 14 balls to reach his fifty off 47 deliveries. From then on, there was no let up in his momentum. Powell apart, the other bowlers were guilty of straying too wide or too straight, or in Chris Gayle's case, too much down leg side. Jayasuriya scored 40 runs in the arc between fine leg and square leg.

  • This game was Jayasuriya's 384th one-day international and he drew level with Sachin Tendulkar as the world's most-capped player. While Tendulkar marked his 384th game with a duck, Jayasuriya celebrated it with a hundred. It was also Jayasuriya's third World Cup century; Aravinda de Silva and Marvan Atapattu are behind him with two.
  • Jayasuriya also went past Inzamam-ul-Haq's aggregate of 11,739 during the course of his innings. Jayasuriya has now scored 11,816 ODI runs, and is second only Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for most ODI runs (14847).
  • The partnership of 183 between Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene equalled the highest third-wicket stand for Sri Lanka in World Cups. Aravinda de Silva and Asanka Gurusinha also added 183 for the third wicket against Kenya at Kandy in 1996.
  • Chaminda Vaas finished the match with figures of 2 for 19 and went past Shaun Pollock to become the fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODIs. Vaas now has 377 wickets while Pollock has 375. In West Indies' chase Brian Lara became the first batsman to be stumped off Vaas' bowling.
  • Jayasuriya became only the second Sri Lankan after Aravinda de Silva, and the third in World Cups, to score a hundred and take three wickets in the same match. Aravinda scored an unbeaten 107 and took 3 for 42 against Australia in the final of the 1996 World Cup, while Netherlands' Feiko Kloppenberg made 121 and claimed 4 for 42 against Namibia at Bloemfontein in 2003.
  • The 113-run loss was West Indies' largest margin of defeat in a World Cup match after Australia beat them by 103 runs at Antigua on Tuesday. These two defeats are the only times that West Indies have conceded more than 300 in a World Cup.
