 Profile

At 5 foot 4 inches, Tony Cottey is one of the shortest players in county cricket, but few have a bigger heart than the 32 year old from Swansea. He is highly regarded as a determined middle order batsman and a more than useful off-spinner. He made his Glamorgan debut in 1986 after a brief, but quite successful career as a professional footballer with Swansea City. He soon established himself in the Glamorgan side, winning his county cap in 1992, and in 1995 amassing 1465 runs. In 1996 he was appointed the county's vice-captain, and he responded with 1543 runs and a career best 203 against Leicestershire at Swansea. He is one of the best players of spin bowling in the first-class game, and his nimble footwork, deft sweeping and rock-solid defence have been hallmarks of his play. Cottey had a modest season in 1997, although he shared a match-winning partnership with Matthew Maynard against Essex at Cardiff and helped to guide Glamorgan to a crucial victory. He returned to form in 1998 by passing a thousand runs, but at the end of the season he rejected a new two-year contract with Glamorgan, and joined Sussex on a five-year contract.
