Yorkshire v Sri Lanka A, Tour match, Headingley

Lokuarachchi sets up thrilling win for Sri Lanka A

Cricinfo staff

July 31, 2007

Sri Lanka A 241 for 9 (Lokuarachchi 77, Kandamby 66, Prasad 28*) beat Yorkshire 239 for 8 (Gale 81) by one wicket
Scorecard

Dammika Prasad held his nerve to edge Sri Lanka A to a thrilling one-wicket win over Yorkshire. Sri Lanka reached their target of 240 with 10 balls to spare - a relatively comfortable victory in the end, having been in the perilous position of 73 for 6.

The win was set up by a superbly controlled yet aggressive partnership between Thilina Kandamby and Kaushal Lokuarachchi who put on 128 for the seventh wicket, hauling Sri Lanka out of the depths and into a position from which they could genuinely attack the target.

Lokuarachchi, who has enjoyed an excellent tour with the bat in particular, smacked 77 from 55 balls with seven fours and two sixes, while Kandamby was no less efficient in his 77-ball 66. Both fell in quick succession, however, and once Lokuarachchi was dismissed by Ajmal Shahzad, they slipped to 210 for 9 - still requiring a further 30 to win.

But Prasad and Chanaka Welegedara, the No. 11, held their nerve with Prasad cracking a four to take them over the line. Earlier, Yorkshire's innings was led by an industrious 81 from Andrew Gale and a more aggressive 36 from Simon Guy. But in spite of Shahzad picking up 5 for 51 to reduce Sri Lanka to such a hazardous position, Yorkshire underestimated the determination of their tail.
