Stanford 20/20

Cuffy thrilled with T&T's performance

The Trinidad and Tobago National senior cricket team came in for high praise from former national captain Theo Cuffy following their campaign in the recently concluded Stanford 20/20 series, where they ended as runners-up.

Former T&T captain Cuffy, now national coach of the Cayman Islands, said that he was very impressed with the team's overall performance and felt that Trinidad and Tobago was the team to beat in the tournament. "After the very first match T&T played against the Caymans I was very, very impressed and said to myself that it was going to be very hard for anyone to beat them," Cuffy stated.

T&T defeated the Cayman Islands in their opening fixture and went on to play in the final against Guyana, which they lost in the penultimate ball of the game.

Cuffy, the former Clico Preysal captain, showered praise on Daren Ganga for the astute manner in which he captained the team as well as his individual performance with the bat. "Ganga clearly demonstrated that he knew what he was about and marshalled his team with distinction. Ganga also showed that he can adapt to any form of the game and this was very evident as the statistics would show."

However he was disappointed with the selection of the twenty players for the All Stars match against South Africa for a purse of five million dollars, winners take all, in November. "If the yardstick to select the squad was based on the performances in the tournament then Denesh Ramdin, William Perkins and Samuel Badree should definitely have been included. In my opinion Badree and Perkins were the revelation of the series and clearly Ramdin's performance was by far better than any other wicket keeper batsman in the tournament."

Guyana collected US$ one million for winning the final, while T&T walked away with US$500,000 as runners-up.
