Kirsten dumped as Western Province coach

Cricinfo staff

April 29, 2005

Western Province Boland have decided not to retain Peter Kirsten, their coach, when his contract expires at the end of April. Western Province failed to win any silverware during the 2004-05 season, narrowly missing out on the Supersport Series final, and they did not fare well in either of the one-day tournaments.

Andre Odendaal, the CEO of Western Cape Cricket (Pty) Ltd, said: "On behalf of all at Western Province and Western Cape Cricket, I would like to thank Peter for the contribution he has made as coach in recent years, and wish him the best for the future. His input has been valuable and although he is no longer in the coaching position, he remains a valued member of the local cricketing community and a cricket icon the region is proud of."

Kirsten, 49, played 12 Tests for South Africa after making his debut aged 37 following their readmission into international cricket. His only Test century came against England at Headingley in 1994.
