Local fans had to plenty to cheer about on Wednesday as Antigua defeated St. Lucia by 48 runs in the Stanford 20/20 tournament.

St. Lucia never looked like reaching the target of 147 despite a promising start. Derryck Edwards put in a good allround performance, scoring 33 and taking two wickets to guide his side to victory.

Choosing to bat first, the Antigua openers Edwards and Austin Richards got off to a solid start, adding 66 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd which showed up in large numbers two hours before the start. However, St. Lucia pulled things back with four wickets before the 15th over, starting with the run-out of Richards by Garey Mathurin from backward point.

Ridley Jacobs, the former West Indies wicketkeeper, steadied the innings as the St. Lucia spinners troubled the batsmen at the other end. Jacobs showed no sign of being bogged down, smashing two huge sixes in his fluent 31 off only 20 balls. Mathurin, a left-arm spinner, was back in action in a dramatic final over, picking up three wickets for only five runs, finishing with 4 for 25.

St. Lucia's openers, Craig Emmanuel and Alvin LaFeuille, got their team off to a good start adding 34 in four overs. Again, it was a run-out that ended the partnership, LaFeuille being the first to go. Thereafter, it was Antigua all the way as Edwards troubled the batsmen with his swing, picking up two wickets, while Jacobs, in his unfamiliar role as a bowler, chipped in with 3 for 8.
