Intercontinental Cup 2007-08

Davison axed as selectors look to the future

June 19, 2007

It appears that John Davison was dropped from the Canada squad for the forthcoming ODIs and Intercontinental Cup match rather than being unavailable.

There has been speculation since last week when he was a notable absentee from the 13-man team, but no reason was given for his absence.

The Canadian Cricket Association told Cricinfo that Davison was omitted from the squad because "the national selectors have stated that they are looking to the future and towards qualification for the 2011 CWC. They are using 2007 - and maybe 2008 - for very necessary developmental purposes."

It is unclear where this leaves Davison, who has just turned 37. He lives in Australia and so is not part of the day-to-day set-up, and he has not played state cricket there for four seasons. It may be that the selectors have decided that his age is against him and it is no longer advantageous to fly him in just for major matches.

Davison led Canada in the World Cup but was replaced for the Intercontinental Cup final by Ashish Bagai.
