Cronje barred from Hall of Fame

Cricinfo staff

March 17, 2008

Hansie Cronje, the former South African captain who was banned from cricket after pleading guilty to match-fixing allegations, will not be posthumously inducted in to South Africa's Sports Hall of Fame.

Naas Botha, a former Rugby Union player and the head of the Sports Fall of Fame, said the criterion was clear. "The bottom line is that whoever is inducted cannot cast any shadow of doubt on his sport whatsoever and cannot have brought the sport into disrepute," Botha told Afrikaans newspaper Sondag. "So unfortunately Hansie would not be eligible."

In 2000 the Indian police recorded phone conversations between Cronje and bookmakers. Subsequently Cronje testified of his involvement in the government-appointed King Commission. Barred from every playing cricket again, Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002.

Basil D'Oliviera, Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards are some of the cricketers who have been inducted in to the Hall of Fame.
