Bangladesh v New Zealand 2008-09

Bangladesh beat New Zealand in a one-day international for the first time at their 12th attempt. The victory, all the sweeter after the ICL defections, was probably their most comprehensive against a major team, and ended a run of 27 one-day defeats by Test sides since they beat South Africa in the 2007 World Cup. Inserted on a slow, low pitch, which offered a little movement after overnight rain, New Zealand collapsed from 47 without loss to a precarious 79 for six. Mashrafe bin Mortaza bowled a superb opening spell of 8-3-19-3, backed up by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak. Oram and Vettori restored some respectability in a stand of 70, but Bangladesh's target was only 202. Junaid Siddique batted with greater maturity than most 20-year-olds, adding 67 with Mushfiqur Rahim and 109 with Mohammad Ashraful, who made a well-paced 60 off 56 balls to settle the issue with 4.3 overs to spare. This was the first match played under a new regulation allowing the batsmen to choose the timing of one block of five powerplay overs restricting the fielders; both sides took their powerplay late in the innings.
