Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, 2005-06

Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, 2005-06

Utpal Shuvro
15-Apr-2007
At Bogra, February 20, 2006 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by five wickets. Toss: Bangladesh.
Bogra ("the cyber info city of Bangladesh") was in festive mood for the first international match at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium, whose 13,000 capacity proved inadequate. The spectators poured in, with painted faces and musical instruments - but left disappointed after yet another heavy defeat. Three late wickets reduced the margin of victory, but Sri Lanka were always in charge after demolishing Bangladesh for just 118 on a shirt-front. The result was assured by the 11th over, when good new-ball bowling from Perera and Maharoof reduced Bangladesh to 37 for five. Khaled Mahmud, Bangladesh's former captain, announced his retirement before this match, and was the lone battler with a gritty 36 before departing to a standing ovation. None of the Sri Lankan batsmen looked entirely at ease, but Sangakkara, dropped behind when 24 by Khaled Mashud, ground his way to the only half-century of the match.
Man of the Match: P. D. R. L. Perera.
