England v New Zealand 2008

Wisden's review of England Lions v New Zealanders, England v New Zealand, 2008

15-Apr-2009
At Southampton, May 8, 9, 10, 11. Drawn. Toss: England Lions.
The New Zealanders' last warm-up came against a team of eight England internationals plus three winter Lions tourists. The only one to thrive on the first day was Wright, who arrived as Martin and Southee were reducing his side to 89 for five and was last out after reaching his third first-class century (none in the Championship) with his second six. In reply, Redmond earned his Test debut by batting throughout the second day for a career-best, despite blows to body and helmet, and the embarrassment of running out McCullum for 47 in 43 balls. The match's third hundred came from Carberry, who was stretchered off with severe cramp after celebrating the landmark with a leap in the air. After Swann had slammed a 41-ball 52, Key set a target of 368 in 75 overs. Redmond and How opened with 150, but there was no serious attempt to chase. Though he was the least successful home seamer, with three tail-end wickets, Hoggard was recalled to England's Test squad, only to be omitted from the final eleven.
Close of play: First day, England Lions 280; Second day, New Zealanders 261-9 (Redmond 139, Martin 0); Third day, England Lions 275-5 (Rashid 23, Swann 2).
