At Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, October 18, 2006 (day/night). West Indies won by ten runs. West
Indies 2 pts. Toss: West Indies.
Australia's attempt to win the Champions Trophy for the first time was given a severe jolt in
their opening match. West Indies steadied themselves after a typically incisive start from the
Australian bowlers, then Taylor's pace did the rest after Gilchrist had threatened to take his side
home. Gilchrist's run-out after a superb 92 on a two-paced pitch altered the complexion of the
game. He and Clarke had added 101, after Taylor and the accurate Bradshaw had induced a slump
to 81 for four. When Clarke was fooled by Bravo's slower ball, Hussey was left in charge, but
miscalculated for once, took aim at a straight one from Taylor, and missed. Taylor then trapped
Lee leg-before, and bowled Hogg with the first ball of the final over, to complete West Indies' first
hat-trick in one-day internationals and seal a famous victory. In retrospect, Lara's decision to demote
himself to take on the spinners was a masterstroke. From 63 for four, he and Morton added 137,
picking up the tempo as they went along before, hindered by back spasms, he was cut down at
71. But Morton stayed there, and even slammed McGrath for a straight six. That summed up
Australia's day.
Man of the Match: R. S. Morton.
