India v Pakistan

At Mohali, April 1 (day/night)

15-Apr-2000
At Mohali, April 1 (day/night). Pakistan won by seven wickets. Toss: India. International debut: V. Shewag.
In a move to improve neighbourly relations, a special train brought 1,000 Pakistani supporters over the border to Mohali, including silver-bearded Abdul Jalil, who was soon to become a cult figure at the World Cup. They saw their team buck the trend - all five games to date had been won by the side batting first. Pakistan's run-chase did have a wretched start when Prasad, in his first game of the tournament, extracted their top three cheaply. But Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam-ul-Haq put on 163 to win with five overs in hand (they had been docked three when they were again sluggish with their over-rate). Earlier, Ganguly passed fifty after being struck on the chest by Shoaib Akhtar, but India failed to reach 200.
Man of the Match: Ijaz Ahmed.
