India v Sri Lanka 2006-07

Wisden's review of Sri Lanka and India, 2nd ODI, 2006-07

15-Apr-2008
At Rajkot, February 11, 2007. Sri Lanka won by five runs. Toss: India.
As the old firm of Ganguly and Tendulkar put on a round 100 in untroubled style, India looked certain to overhaul a modest target of 258. Even though Jayasuriya applied the brakes - 65 runs came between Sehwag's dismissal to the last ball of the 30th over and the end of the 45th - India still needed just 24 from the last five overs with five wickets in hand. But they collected only 18, with Malinga - who had been expensive earlier - conceding a mere five runs in his final two overs and dismissing the dangerous Karthik. With six wanted from the last two balls Dhoni flailed Jayasuriya over cover, where the retreating Maharoof took a superb catch, keeping his eye on the ball despite the danger of a collision with the in-rushing Tharanga. Earlier, Sangakkara's sixth century in one-day internationals had rescued Sri Lanka after a poor start: they were 58 for four before Sangakkara, who hit four sixes to go with 11 fours, put on 108 with Dilshan. Patel helped secure himself a World Cup place with four wickets, two early on and two with successive balls at the death.
Man of the Match: K. C. Sangakkara.
