India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur, 1st day

24-Nov-2009
It was the fourth ball of the morning sent down by Chanaka Welegedara to Virender Sehwag. Sehwag tried to play it through the covers, got a thick edge as it moved away a hint. Prasanna Jayawardene, the wicketkeeper dived full length to his right but couldn't reach it and Mahela Jayawardene at slip spilled it after his view was blocked.
Following that dropped chance, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir delivered a strong partnership, putting on 233 for the opening wicket. It wasn't just the runs, it was the manner in which they were compiled. The batsmen seemed to do as they wished: and though Sehwag fell after his century, Gambhir got to three figures soon after.
If Sri Lanka were hoping to get back into the match after Sehwag's wicket, they were dealt a cruel blow by the 137-run stand for the second wicket that followed between Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir. Little joy for the visitors as Gambhir blasted away to 150 and Dravid closed in on a well-deserved half-century.
