M Vijay might have missed out on a Lord's century by one shot, but he was not shy of playing one at the press conference.
Asked if Ravindra Jadeja had been spurred on to do something special by the spat between with James Anderson at Trent Bridge, Vijay said: "I think so. The intent was special. So obviously it is helping us."
Jadeja came in to bat with the game in precarious balance. England had taken two quick wickets, India were leading by 179 with just four wickets in hand, and could have lost the match in the next half hour. His counterattacking 68 off 57 later, India had set England a target in excess of 300. Vijay was the batsman who greeted Jadeja to the wicket, and he said he could something special.
"When he came in I could feel the energy, that he would do something special," Vijay said. "The intent was there and from ball one he was positive. At that time we needed somebody like that. I was playing the anchor role, and he was trying to get the runs. I just told him, 'let's build a 25-run partnership and take it from there.'"
Vijay might have got out at a crucial juncture, but he handed the baton over to India's second-best batsman on the tour, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. With Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar added 99 off 100 balls taking the game away from England, who did not know what to do to stop them. Vijay was full of praise for the pair.
"We all believed that because the lower order has been clicking for us," Vijay said. "Jadeja played really well, carrying through his aggressive intent. That really helped us. And obviously Bhuvneshwar was hitting the ball. They both put us in a very good position."
It might be a good position, India are six wickets from only their second win at Lord's but Vijay, who said it would be tricky batting on the final day, is not counting the chickens yet.
"To be honest we are taking it session by session," Vijay said. "Not thinking too far ahead. Just be there and give it our all in every session whether it is batting or bowling. Especially the fielders. We are trying to give our best to the team whichever way we can.
"We are all pumped up to do something special, from the first guy to the 15th guy. We are here to prove a point, we are here to win a game. This game is placed really well. It is going to be a fantastic day tomorrow. Whoever plays the best cricket tomorrow will win."
