Miller out, Young in for Kenya squad

Bowler Colin Miller has withdrawn from the Australian squad to contest the ICC Knock-out tournament in Kenya in October after failing a fitness test on his right calf muscle. South Australian left-arm spinner Brad Young has replaced him in the squad.

Miller tested the calf injury during a ten-over spell in a club practice game for Footscray over the weekend but it caused him sufficient discomfort to force his withdrawal from the squad.

Miller, who was set to make his one-day international debut for Australia during the tournament, is extremely disappointed at missing out.

"I'm devastated. To be picked was a dream come true so it's a massive blow to have the chance of playing one-day international cricket for Australia in this tournament taken away from me," he said.

"What I've got to do now is to get some treatment for the injury and try and get fit again. Being ready for the first Mercantile Mutual Cup or Pura Cup game of the season for Victoria is now my new goal."

Young, 28, has played six one-day internationals for Australia and heard of his selection while traveling on a bus with the South Australian team heading for a training camp in Mildura, Victoria. He is delighted with the chance to again play for his country.

"Obviously it's disappointing for Colin, but I'm just rapt to get the chance to play for Australia again and to be a part of the team during the tour," he said.

After learning of his selection, Young was forced to leave his South Australian teammates behind and get the first available bus back to Adelaide to pack his bags in time for the Australian team's departure for Nairobi on Tuesday evening.

Australian Chairman of Selectors, Trevor Hohns, said that it was a reflection of the depth in Australian cricket that the team could lose a player like Colin Miller and replace him with someone of the quality of Brad Young.

"Clearly losing Colin is not ideal but there is considerable depth in Australian cricket at present and we've now been able to bring Brad back into the squad.

"He's played well for Australia in the past and this will be a good opportunity for him to again perform at this level," said Hohns.
