Muskets at dawn

Richard Hadlee on the time he and David Gower took up weapons

22-Dec-2008

Richard Hadlee: This was a publicity shot for the 1986 Test series in England. I was playing at Nottinghamshire at the time and David for Leicester, so we knew each other pretty well. David had become a bit of a nemesis for New Zealand bowlers in recent contests between our sides. It was going to be my job to eliminate him with my firepower, reduce his shot-making effectiveness and ensure he scored some blanks on the scoreboard, so to speak. It was a memorable tour for us; we won at Trent Bridge, scoring the winning run off a no-ball, one that David, as it happened, threw on purpose - our first series win in England.
