New Zealand v West Indies, 2005-06
Don Cameron
15-Apr-2007
At Westpac Stadium, Wellington, February 18, 2006 (day/night). New Zealand won by 81 runs.
Toss: New Zealand.
New Zealand took the lead in the series with a solid performance. Fortunate to bat first on a
pitch which has a tendency to get more and more sluggish, Astle led them towards visions of a
huge score with a commanding 90 from 106 balls. However, there were only two boundaries in
the last ten overs, wickets tumbled, and they had to settle for 288. It was still too much for West
Indies. After Ganga and Sarwan made studied half-centuries, only Smith, who walloped three
sixes, looked a threat. The spinners strangled the innings, with supersub Patel producing the ball
of the match, which spun across Chanderpaul and bowled him.
Man of the Match: N. J. Astle. Attendance: 18,658.
