Michael Hussey is not looking forward to potentially playing against his state side Western Australia in the Champions Twenty20 League in December. Hussey has chosen to represent the Chennai Super Kings instead of the Warriors but the teams might not meet as they are in separate groups of the competition, which also includes sides from England, South Africa and Pakistan.
"I won't enjoy that at all," Hussey said of a potential clash. "It was a horrible position to be in, I felt like it was a lose-lose." Western Australia, which named a 15-man squad on Tuesday for the event, will be compensated for not having one of their most decorated players available.
"I played for Super Kings in the IPL in the first four games and helped them to qualify for the Champions League, so I sort of feel an allegiance towards them in that respect," Hussey said. "Also, I have never played a Twenty20 game for WA and hence didn't help them achieve the Champions League status. I think I would be taking away the place of a young Western Australian."
Hussey, who signed with the Chennai IPL franchise last year, expects more people will face similar decisions in the future. "I still don't feel comfortable with it, but that may be the way the game is going," he said. "With more of the club franchises cropping up around the world I think maybe in England it's going to happen, and maybe in Australia it's going to happen as well."
The introduction of the tournament means Hussey won't get a break in the lead-up to the three-Test series against South Africa and will have to swap quickly from Twenty20 to five-day mode. "The timing is not ideal, but the schedule is unbelievably busy at the moment," he said. "It's pretty hard to fit anything in so it'll be interesting to see how the guys go.
"I must admit I'm nervous about that as well, to be honest. The huge volume of cricket, different forms of cricket, chopping and changing between Twenty20 and Test cricket, is going to be a challenge, but there are quite a few players in the same boat."
