CB Series 2007-08

'Australia need to learn from India'

March 4, 2008

Ian Chappell reviews the CB series and says that while a young and vibrant Indian team can take a lot of positives out from the series, both Australia and Sri Lanka need to inject youth into what have become ageing one-day sides

Australia need not learn from India to rope in youngstars just because they lost the ODI series. even though aussies players are aged and indians are young. can the youngstars of india come in comparision to the fielding level of haydens, symonds, husseys...never can the young team india can match them...it was the same aussie team who won worldcup, ashes 5-0...why do everyone write them off for just one failure...surely, aussies will bounce back.

I think Australia is like the bully in school. He runs over everybody, but when someone stands up, doesnt know where to look. Australia without doubt had a truly world class and most talented team; but in crunch games, also had just that little extra luck. They'd always win the toss in the finals, plunder the opposition with special innings, and practically bat out the opposition. Even this time around, there was the opportunity in the first final. Just that there was an attack that - though not deadly, was definitley up to the challenge. And once they lost the plot in the first game, India did to Australia what they have been doing all along. Bat them out of the game in the second match. It is real tough to chase a 250+ score in a key 'must-win' finals, and any team - Australia included - would fail 9 times out of 10.

Just Get the side right. Hopes is the LUCKIEST player going around in WORLD cricket..Why he is even in the side? He can't play spin - What goes on there. How ridiculous at this level. Where's the State cricketer of the year?? The Bradman Medalist - What's the point of having that award if you don't get a Guernsey?..Where's' Dave..Where's Ash?? And SYMONDS getting regular games is a joke..is it just me that cringes every time I see him walk to the crease..He is the biggest scam of international cricket since Greg Ritchie or Dirk Wellham. Seriously thou, I am still in shock that he gets a regular Test match gig. One dayers - yeah I guess I can understand the idea of Symonds is nice (a batting all rounder that can field brilliantly), but the truth of the matter is he's just an excellent fielder. If he scored runs REGULARLY(& by that I mean 30/40+) then we wouldn't need his fielding. At the end of the day he's not a batting all rounder, he's not a bowling all rounder. He's a fielder.

Youngsters might have done a splendid job, but remember that without the master's effort we would have been no where in the brink of victory. He proved that he is the master in all cricketing talents. We all Indians REQUEST DHONI NOT to overlook SACHIN as he did with Dravid and Ganguly. Only with the help of Sachin, we can build a strong young side. Allow him to play till he wants to play. NO ONE CAN REPLACE SACHIN. It will only be useful. Finally, kudos to the Indian side for winning the CB series.

I agree with comments posted by convict_beater on March 05 2008, 13:35 PM GMT. Symo had no business "tackeling" the streaker. Imagine if the guy had been seriously injured, like a broken neck or something? Would he & CA & ICC be immune from prosecution? I seriously doubt that! He should have let the police do their job. I have a feeling he actually did it to take out his frustration and anger (towards India & Harbhajan). He needs some serious counseling and a warning that he could be banned for life!!

Well I quite agree with Mr Chappel's Opinion about bringing youth into the forefront. It has been a blend of youth and seasoned campaigners in the Indian team over the last few seasons but, the outcome of the finals would at least guarantee brighter outlook for INDIAN team (at least for the near future). All said and done, the Indians did turn tables on Australia. Bearing in mind, most of them haven't been in the Australian's (both media and Players)good books. Why would they because the Indians got under the skin of many Australian players which, eventually came to a breaking point. So!!!! rely on your past experience of attacking the opposition PSYCHOLOGICALLY. OOPS, it backfired. The bottom line is you play against merits, not by mind games, not by slagging the opposition on radio channels, and definitely not by rugby tackling. Age is no barrier when it comes to cricket. The best example being SACHIN TENDULKAR who started his career when he was 16.

For many years the strong Australian team masked the deeply flawed thinking of their board and selectors. Now the chinks are beginning to show and they are ill-prepared to respond. For example they debuted Chris Rogers at the age of 30. How stupid is that! How many more years do they expect out of that brilliant selection! They have no world-class spinners anywhere in sight! Even Brett Lee is getting on in age for a fast bowler! Their next strike bowler is who? Nathan Brackett? Mitchell Johnson? Shaun Tate? Don't make me laugh!! On the other hand the Indian board & selectors (whom we love to hate and denigrate, sometimes for good reason) have made some wise decisions improbable as that may seem! And now they have a plethora of talent and a wonderful dilema on their hands. Cricket is fast becoming a young man's game (like many other sports). Skills are being developed and honed at an earlier age (e.g. Ishant, Rohit, Pyuish, etc.) The Aussies seem to be stuck in the stone age.

Don't forget that if the Tri series wasn't in place the result would have been 3-2 from 5 games in favour of Australia and we would be talking about Australia not performing in dead rubbers. All depends on how you look at it. :)

I think the result of this series speak volumes about the impact Shane Warne and Glen Mcgrath had on the performances of Team Australia. Their exit has made the Aussies look very ordinary. I do not wish to take away any credit from the Indian teams performance, they have indeed performed well and beating Australia in Australia is no mean achievement. I think it really has to do a lot with the composition of the teams the Indians were a young team and ready to put in their best on the other hand the Aussies lookd like GRAND dad's army and i do agree with Ian Chappel that the aussies need to learn from the Indians and the sooner the better. Finally I think Ponting must also go for the damage that he has done to cricket is far too much and I dont think he will be a welcome figure if he tours any country with Team Australia and will only be an excess baggage for the team.
