The Round Table
'The ICC is being ruled by its members'
July 8, 2008
"Cricket has got to find a way to govern itself without allowing self-interest to dictate policy." Tony Greig, Sanjay Manjrekar and Derek Pringle discuss the ICC's handling of the Zimbabe issue, the problems that are emerging between the old firm of England and Australia and the new powerhouse that is Indian cricket, and why the ICC needs to be revamped

Everybody acts out of self-interest even when it does not feel like self interest to them. For example when the MCC and Cricket Australia were powerful they preferred discretionary vetos over rules that applied to all. In those days, out of self interest, countries like India asked for equality and rule of law. Today with the tables turned, the erstwhile powers England and Australia are wishing for the rule of law, again out of self interest. If the UN is purely driven by international power politics why should cricket be an exception?

Where were the voices of Tony Greig, Ian Chappell et al when the MCC and CA (Cricket Australia) had veto powers ?
I am not condoning the actions of the ICC in ignoring and supporting Zimbabwe - it is wrong.
But the cricket pundits by complaining now is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Work with the Asian bloc as equal partners, acknowledge that the balance of power has shifted and only then can you expect equitable and fair treatment. Pawar and co in the BCC are a power hungry (and money hungry to boot) with no governmental or judicial controls to ensure that cricket benefits.
Ask for a governance policy and proper accounting methods. Why do you think the ICC has turned a blind eye to Zimbabwean cricket board not being accurate in their funds usage ? Because, the Asian bloc cricket boards themselves have no accounting standards or fiscal responsibility.
Address these issues and you can expect the ICC to be like the UEFA or the US Olympic association.

When Derek Pringle talks about how the Businessmen would be bored if only the subcontinental teams played, he should remember that the whole cricket world is already bored with England and English players only wanting to play Australia and whining and staying at home when they have to play anywhere else.

From the comments of SM, he reminds me of late Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru who was so much influenced by English that he failed to see India for its goods. SM: grow a pair...

Sanjay seems to be only sane representative of Indian cricket.
I am appalled by some of the comments made by the public. Some of them even do not realise suporting Zimbabwe cricket in its present form is like supporting South Africa at the height of aparthied. Unfortunately cricket administration has become like the Eurovision song contest where member countries vote for their neighbours - even if they had fought bloody wars in the past.
To Ratnakar - Not everything Amarica does is correct. You are comparing apples and oranges by comparing league adminstration with international cricket.
To ArchPrakash- Please open up your mind. There is a world ouside the BCCI and its cronies.

Most sporting associations are run by lawyers and accountants, who are employed as CEOs and the like. This is true of American sports such as the basketball, American football, baseball and hockey leagues; as well as European / Latin American sports like football (soccer). Past players usually play a technical role - managers, coaches, trainers etc.The same model has been replicated by the ICC. So what's the big brouhaha about. There is no guarantee that having a sports person as administrator is going to improve the running of the game. Lastly, a Council can only implement the decisions taken by consensus among its members, and not overrule them. So, if the ICC is being run by its members, or that's what is printed, it's a good sign of democratic virtue.

Sanjay needs to gain some more common sense before actually criticizing BCCI. He has not understood the politics by ECB here. Long way to go my man. Wake up and start looking critically at other Board as well and not only BBCI.

It is funny how it all comes down the "vote". I think Sanjay Manjrekar is only partly right when he says "So any body that comes into existence because of votes has a political flavor to it". The thing is that money is an even bigger influencer. Just to give an example, when India had to play South Africa in the 1974 Davis Cup final at a time when SA were serving an international ban, India chose not to do so and to forgo a shot at the title. If indeed the ECB is serious about the principle of the thing, they could have taken a similar stance to show that their heart bleeds more for the financial and political issues in Zimbabwe than their own financial interest. Their failure to do so shows that while it is all quite fine to blame the BCCI for politicking, such a representation is just a convenient misrepresentation.

that was one of the best round tables i have seen!!! sanjay i only wish that there were more of you in india! the icc really should look at a sporting body like FIFA, this body governs the biggest game on the globe and has many more member nations than cricket will ever have and far more ethnic diversity as well yet they function extremely well and seem to achieve the best outcomes for soccer year in year out. why not try and poach a couple of administrators from them? the icc cant really do any worse than it already is!
