Pedro Collins produced a record-breaking spell of left-arm swing bowling, grabbing 7 for 11, to shoot out West Indies Under-19 for a measly 18 in their Zone A match of the KFC Cup one-day tournament at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground.
This was the lowest total in domestic one-dayers. It was also the smallest score since the introduction of regional one-day cricket in 1976. Bermuda's 48 against the Windward Islands in 1999 in Jamaica was the previous lowest. Collins, 31, was expectedly awarded the Man of the Match. His spell eclipsed Leeward Islands' medium-pacer Hamesh Anthony's previous best of 7 for 15 versus Barbados at the Antigua Recreation Ground in 1995.
Winning the toss and having no hesitation in taking first strike in sultry conditions, the Under-19s were in for a rude shock. They lost their first wicket with just a run on the board, when Fidel Edwards bowled Kieron Powell with the first ball of the second over, before Collins did some serious damage.
Collins snared the scalps of Rashidi Boucher, Darren Bravo and skipper Steven Jacobs, all for ducks, and the Under-19s were reeling at 2 for 4 in the fifth over. Edwards soon sent back Devon Thomas, inducing an edge to first slip, before Collins polished off the tail with the wickets of Andre Creary, Shacoya Thomas, Veerasammy Permaul, and Dawes.
It took just 5.5 overs for Barbados to knock off the target but it was not before they lost Martin Nurse (3) and Dale Richards (2). Fast bowler Jason Dawes claimed both wickets. The Under-19s now face another tough opponent in Jamaica at Enmore on Thursday while Barbados come up against the Leeward Islands at the GCC ground, Bourda.
Jamaica 169 for 4 beat Leeward Islands 167 (Banks 62) by 6 wickets
Scorecard
Jamaica sailed past Leeward Islands in their KFC Cup opener at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. Leewards' captain Runako Morton chose to bat first but his side couldn't make use of the advantage, falling to 167 all out off 44.3 overs. Jamaica strolled home in 39.5 overs, riding on a solid batting effort led by Shawn Findlay's 41 and Brenton Parchment's 40.
Chris Gayle, newly appointed Jamaica captain, struck seven fours in his 31-ball 33. A 66-run stand between Parchment and Findlay then set up the chase - hustling between the wickets in between some gorgeous strokes. Findlay benefited from a dropped chance when Gavin Tonge spilled a skier off the bowling of Curtis Roberts.
The much hyped Australian batsman Brendon Nash, who had earlier delivered 10 miserly overs of left arm medium pace for 26 runs, didn't impress with the bat. Nash, a left-hander whose father is a former Jamaican Olympic swimmer, laboured to a 17-ball 6 before edging to the wicketkeeper. However, Danza Hyatt and Tamar Lambert combined for a 36-run stand as Jamaica pocketed full points.
The Leeward Islands' innings was built on two substantial partnerships, both involving top scorer Omari Banks. Banks, the Man of the Match, ground out 62 from 107 balls before claiming 2 for 46. He added 52 for the fourth wicket with Morton who contributed an attacking 44 from 69 balls with five fours, after the Leewards found themselves in early difficulties at 35 for 3 in the eighth over.
The Leewards' innings stuttered after three run outs and Jerome Taylor returned for a second spell to dent the lower order, finishing with three for 34 after partnering Daren Powell (1-35) to undermine the top order early on.
