Women's Test cricket witnessed the beginnings of a revival in 2021, when India toured England and Australia in the space of three months. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah seemed to have made the decision all but unilaterally, announcing Tests for both tours before the home boards had done so. It ended a stretch in which no women's Tests had been played, other than the Ashes, since 2014.

As with India's tour of England, and the Ashes, the Australian matches formed a multi-format series, with two points per win in the white-ball games, and four points for the one-off Test. The series opened the southern hemisphere season, and was relocated, at late notice, to three venues in Queensland because of interstate travel restrictions during the pandemic.

The result, 11-5 to Australia, did not reflect the contest. The Test ended with India in a dominant position, but rain spoiled their chances of pressing for a win, further underlining the need for women's Tests to be played over five days. India also lost a winning position to the weather in one of the T20s, having fumbled a victory in the final over of the second one-dayer.

That handed Australia their 26th consecutive win in the format, extending the record for either gender that dated back to 2017. India ended the streak in the next match, another close finish - evidence of a young side growing in confidence against the best.
